A Guide to Making Non-Toxic Swaps (Without the Overwhelm)

Let’s be honest—making healthier choices can feel a little overwhelming at first. You want to reduce the toxins in your home, take better care of your family, and clean up your routines…but where do you even begin?

I’ve been there. What started as a simple swap for cleaner baby products quickly snowballed into a deep dive of ingredient labels, hidden toxins, and a million tabs open on my browser.

Here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Small, consistent changes really do add up—and I’m here to help you get started without the stress.

Start Here: 5 Easy Swaps That Make a Big Impact

You don’t need to toss everything overnight. Focus on the things you use most often or that directly touch your skin and airways.

1. Swap: Conventional All-Purpose Cleaner → Plant-Based, Essential Oil-Infused

Think: Thieves Household Cleaner (this one bottle replaces SO many).

2. Swap: Synthetic Fragrance Plug-ins or Candles → Essential Oil Diffuser

  • Why it matters: “Fragrance” is a catch-all term that can hide hundreds of chemicals.

  • My go-to: A diffuser with lavender, citrus, or grounding blends (I have one in almost every room).

→ Grab one of my favorite essential oil starter bundles that includes seven of the best smelling oils along with the sleekest diffuser all for a great value!

3. Swap: Dryer Sheets → Wool Dryer Balls + Drops of Essential Oil

  • Why it matters: Dryer sheets are full of artificial scents and coatings.

  • Try: A few drops of lavender or purification oil on wool balls for fresh laundry without the toxins.

→ Here are the wool dryer balls that I use–they come in a set of six.

4. Swap: Aluminum-Based Deodorant → Natural, Baking Soda-Free Option

  • Why it matters: Our lymph nodes and hormone systems are directly affected by what goes on our underarms.

  • My tip: It may take a short adjustment period, but it's worth it.

→ I love Native Deodorant in Coconut & Vanilla.

5. Swap: Plastic Food Storage → Glass or Silicone

  • Why it matters: Plastics can leach endocrine-disrupting chemicals into your food (especially when heated).

  • Start small: Swap out your most-used containers first.

→ Here is the 30-piece glass storage set that we have. I love that they come in round, rectangular, and square.

Tips for Keeping It Simple

  • Pick one area at a time: Kitchen, laundry, skincare—whatever feels most doable right now.

  • Use what you have: Don’t feel pressure to toss everything. Finish what you’ve got, then replace with a better choice.

  • Follow trusted voices: There’s a lot of noise out there—curate your info sources.

  • Progress > perfection: This isn’t about being 100% toxin-free—it’s about reducing your exposure and doing the best you can.
