Why Body Composition Analysis Is Helpful—But Not the Whole Story
At the CrossFit gym I attend, we have the opportunity to get a body composition analysis done every quarter. This is one of the perks of being a member there and I’m so appreciative to have this benefit. It’s a quick, data-driven check-in that gives us insight into our weight, body fat percentage, and lean muscle mass. I’ve come to appreciate these regular assessments because they allow me to see how my training, nutrition, and lifestyle changes are showing up in measurable ways. It’s powerful to look back at where I started—just two years ago—and recognize how far I’ve come.
But here’s the thing—I’ve also learned that these numbers don’t tell the whole story.
At my most recent check-in, I expected to see a dramatic shift. I’ve been consistent in the gym, lifting heavy, pushing myself with cardio and endurance work. I’ve been prioritizing nutrient-dense meals, sleep, hydration, and supplementing intentionally. I feel phenomenal. Strong. Focused. Energized.
So when I looked at the numbers and saw only a small change, I won’t lie—it stung a little. There was a moment where I felt deflated. Like all the effort I’ve been putting in wasn’t being reflected the way I thought it would.
But then I took a step back.
Because progress is more than data points on a sheet of paper. It’s how you feel in your body. It’s the energy to play with your kids, the strength to lift heavier than you could last month, the mental clarity and mood stability that come from fueling well and honoring your body.
Body composition scans are a helpful tool—but they are just that: a tool. One piece of the puzzle. They’re great for identifying trends and checking in, but they shouldn’t define your worth or be the sole measure of your success.
So if you’ve been putting in the work and not seeing the “big” shifts you expected on paper, don’t discount how far you’ve come. You know your body better than any machine does.
Trust how you feel.
Honor the effort.
Keep going.
